Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

Volunteering is a vital part of day-to-day life in the UK, and in 2002 The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups, was set up to recognise the outstanding contributions made by voluntary groups in local communities across the country.

750 groups have received this prestigious honour to date, including 85 from Scotland.  However, we are continually striving to recognise more of those who are operating to the highest standard.  Groups may previously not have been nominated because they, or those in a position to nominate them, have been unaware of their eligibility for the Award.

To ensure more volunteer communities in Scotland receive the recognition they deserve at a national level, you are invited to help encourage nominations for The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service for groups in your area.

To this end, a short information pack has been developed.  It comprises:

  • Background information about the Award
  • Guidance on how to nominate
  • Who is eligible to win the Award and the benefits it can bring to a group
  • A press release template that can be tailored and used to promote local nominations and raise awareness of volunteering in your community
  • Case study examples of previous Scottish recipients of the Award

It would be marvellous to see many more groups put forward for the recognition they deserve, and hopefully the information pack can help raise awareness of the Award and celebrate such groups’ work for the benefit of others. The deadline for nominations is 30 September 2010.
